mitt romney attacked obama's decision... said standing up to china was "bad for the nation and our workers." how can mitt romney take on the cheaters... when he's taking their side? >>> it is 21 minutes past the hour. as the candidates continue to prepare for the big debate tonight, a tape surfaces, one that tucker carlson's conservative website the daily caller bills as obama's other race speech. a clip. >> it is quiet riots that take place every day are born from the same place as the fires and the destruction and the police decked out in riot gear and deaths. they happen when a sense of disconnect settles in and hope dissipates. despair takes hold and young people all across the country look at the way the world is and they believe that things are never going to get better. >> carlson called this a bombshell, but a little reality here, this tape is not new. it was an open press event recorded in its entirety in 2007. and many media outlets including cnn extensively covered it, even tucker carlson himself covered it in 200

you'll remember that there were many debates that then candidate barack obama and now president obama did in the democrat primary four years ago as well as mitt romney had debates four years ago and also in this most recent primary. president obama does have the advantage of having done the one on one with john mccain four years ago. he went one on one with mccain. he did very well. most would say he beat john mccain. so i think -- i think the onerous is on president obama. >> the director of debates at southern illinois university wrote an op-ed for cnn and said both have strengths and weaknesses and this will be one of the most important presidential debates we've seen in history. here's how he outlines it. when you talk about romney's strength he says he's smooth, knowledge able, excellent first lines and tends to pivot. he says president obama, his strengths, he can be detached, he has an ability to focus and crystallize that's very strong on his reasoning. donna, do you see either one of these as being accurate here? do you think that there's some sort of opportunity, if you will

so there's a lot on the line for mitt romney, barack obama tomorrow night. tens of millions of people will be watching. of course, a lot here on cnn. there is over 3,000 journalists who are actually credentialed to come and cover this debate. 700 of them are from other countries. so the whole world will be watching. >> and jim lahr is the moderator for debate number one. how long do the candidates get to answer the questions? because some candidates are pretty long-winded. >> reporter: they are, and that's going to be the struggle and one of the challenges for the moderator torrow as well as the other debate moderators, including candy crowley who will be moderating a debate later this month. 30 seconds to about a minute to answer a question. and of course there's a rebut l rebuttal. if we do see sharp exchange back and forth, sometimes the train can get off the track and the candidates tend to go after that. that's is the kind of must-see tv that people are looking for. we'd rather see the candidates engage one another, challenge one another on the issues,
